Another great question Alice! So neurons on the right side of the brain extend down the brain stem cross over to the left side at the base of the stem! Sensory neurons on the left also swap sides as they travel down the brain stem. This little oddity is called decussation! So now because the right side of your brain is actually connected to the left side of the brain stem, whenever someone touches your left hand, it’s the right side that senses it! The exceptions to this are smell, sight, and sound. Your sense of smell isn’t reversed (your nose connects to the front part of the brain), and your eyes send some information to both sides of the brain! Sounds are odd in that they are “analysed” on both sides of the lower portions of the brain, but only on one side of the cortex!
I imagine Ella or Alex will be in a better place to advance on this and please correct me if I’m wrong! But that is what I have learnt whilst researching this for you 🙂

I’ve just had to a bit of reading to answer this. So our brain is split into the left and right hemisphere, the sensory neuron from the hemispheres crisscross at some point. This means that if you want to lift your left leg then the right hand side of your brain would control the muscles to do it. Again if someone squeezes your right hand the left hemisphere senses this. However this doesn’t apply to everything, this doesn’t happen with our sense of smell and information from sight gets sent to both parts of the brain. I think from what I’ve read there is still a huge amount of research that needs to be done in this area of neuroscience. Maybe with a question like that you’re the person to do it?!?! 👍🏻
