I don’t work in research. I’m very lucky that many years before me researchers did an amazing job which has allowed me to do the job I do the way I do it. I work really closely with researchers and research students from Cardiff University and absolutely admire them. It’s really important to understand and respect what other scientists do because in some way researchers have had a huge impact on your life.

I started my PhD in September but have only just started my main research project last month. Lots of exciting, new things to learn!

Hmm well sometimes construction projects take tens of years to design and build, the same for water and oil/gas wells! So some projects that I’m working on go on for years and years, others might only be for a week! It’s really nice having the variability, as with big projects you get to do some amazing things that have a huge impact – such as a third runway at Heathrow or HS2, and with the smaller projects you get to see your interpretations proven right and your designs built! It’s cool driving over a bridge or through a tunnel that you helped design.
