The first CT scanner was developed by Godfrey Hounsfield in the late 1960s. He developed it to image the brain, so cancers could be diagnosed and surgery planned. The first medical CT scan was in 1971.

The type of CT scanners I work with are for research purposes, this means we can get much better images by using lots more x-rays and much longer scans. We can’t use these on live patients, but we do use them to aid diagnosis for pathologists and dentists. The CT scanners I use were first develped from Houndsfield’s designs by Jim Elliott in 1981.

      Hope this helps!
